Mars is now less than three months away from leaving the world stage and entering the Underworld. For 123 days, he will dwell on the other side of the Sun, which we term the exterior underworld.
The two Virgo New Moons at 0Virgo23 on August 23 and 29Virgo05 on September 21 somewhat frame this quest and inspire this inquiry.
Mars – Moon
On Tuesday, August 26, at 7:26AM PDT, Mars and the Moon align at 12Libra25. Mars is now journeying far from Earth and Sun and has faded to magnitude 1.7 only, though still pretty clearly visible at the beginning of dusk.
This is the fifth Moon-Mars conjunction since Mars began Phase Two of his 25-month Cancer synodic overstory on April 8. That was when he reached the 26Cancer12 degree of his January 15 Sun opposition, representing his first breath. Phase Two is analogous to ages 22 until the Pluto square and midlife crisis phases in the archetypal human lifespan. This is Mars’ Questing phase, when as an evening planet, he encounters seven to ten challenges – or “hard things” in the Pawnee telling – on the way to the underworld.
Passing The Stars of The Virgin Priestess
In this Cancer Overstory there are seven Moon-Mars conjunctions before Mars enters the underworld on November 13. This fifth conjunction is particularly significant with regards to the stars he will be passing!
It is the potent stars of the Virgin Priestess Constellation that will be transmitting to Mars as he journeys to the exterior underworld. He already passed the tail of the Lion and entered the head of the Priestess, passing Zavijawa at 27Virgo08 on August 3, and Zaniah at 4Libra47 on August 13. Zaniah was the ancient pre-patriarchal star of the hierodule and sacred sexuality.
As he enters this fifth portal on August 26 he aligns with:
- Vindemiatrix at 10Libra12: an ancient star symbolizing substances that enable altered and expanded states of awareness
- Porrima at 10Libra24: an ancient star of prophecy
- Algorab at 13Libra43 (Mars passes here on August 27-28): the main star of Corvus the Crow or Raven, which was the oracular bird-family of the priestesses before Apollo took them over. The bright trapezoidal star configuration is just to the right of the Priestess.
Spica at 24Libra06 (Mars passes here on September 13-14): Many traditions see Spica as the central and most important star of Women’s Mysteries. Variously pictured as an ear of corn, a staff of wheat, or even a rice paddy in Bali, pre-patriarchal views even see her as positioned on the sexual and reproductive organs of the Priestess.
By September 24, at his sixth Moon-Mars portal (01Scorpio27), Mars will have slowly exited the Priestess constellation to face his next challenge by moving through the Scales.
Deep Teaching from The Sacred Feminine
It seems clear to me that Mars is receiving deep teachings from the sacred feminine. The question is, will he be open to it? Will he be able to recognize and even grieve the damage done to the Sacred Feminine by more recent and limited views of Cancer and masculinity? Time will tell! Interesting indicators may be the September 15 Venus-Mars sextile and the September 4 Mars-Jupiter square.
