Mars Squares Neptune October 11th
October comes in with the first of 3 Mars-Neptune squares while Mars is in the sign of Gemini. The square takes place October 11th at 23°21’ Gemini (Mars) – Pisces (Neptune). Along with the eclipse season and the Saturn-Uranus square, this relationship between Mars and Neptune is part of a theme for the rest of 2022 and into 2023.
When outside looking for the red-orange planet Mars, it will be rising between the horns of the Bull constellation, rising with them not long after the Bull’s Eye, Aldebaran rises. Mars is brighter than all the stars around it at this time and continues to brighten until early December. By the end of October, it will be visible for most of the evening and through the early morning hours.
About every two years, Earth catches up to Mars in its orbit. When this happens, Mars spends an exceptional amount of time in one or two signs. Normally, Mars transits a sign, on average about 6-8 weeks. But in this case, Mars will spend 7 months in the sign of Gemini.
This transit through the sign of Gemini brings in a very different archetypal expression then what happened in 2020-21 when Mars spent 6 ½ months in the sign of Aries.
During the Gemini transit, Mars will square Neptune three times and enters into a new synodic cycle on December 7th. This is when Mars and the Sun reach opposition and is called an “acronychal rise” of Mars. It’s also the closing phase of the larger Mars synodic cycle that began at the last acronychal rise on October 13, 2020 in the sign of Aries. This is the phase of Mars incubating the archetypal expression of Gemini, invoking a new overstory of that mystery school (sign).
Neptune, the other part of this square, has been in the sign of Pisces since 2011, continuing there until 2025. Mars squares Neptune nearly every year (waxing and waning squares), but it is rarer for Mars to square any other planet 3 times in the same sign within a 6-month period. The last time a set of 3 squares took place was in 2005-06 while Mars was in the sign of Taurus and Neptune in Aquarius.
More specifically, the last time Mars had a hard aspect 3 times with Neptune while Mars was in the sign of Gemini, was in 1817-18, when Mars had 3 oppositions with Neptune in Sagittarius.
The meaning of Mars squaring Neptune lies in the signs they are each in and what each of the two planets symbolize astrologically. The square pattern may create sharp confusion in our sense of reality and our relationship to the masculine. Spirituality can be called into question, especially if we are experiencing a personal astrological cycle with Mars and Neptune.
The mind itself is expanded beyond the tethers of the middle-world form and structure, which may result in being lost in ideas and roles we want to be. It could even result in an identity crisis at the same time it opens the mind to the heart and spirit to all being one and same in the celestial realm.
The other two times of the Mars-Neptune square are:
November 19, 2022 – 22°42’
March 14, 2023 – 25°04’
