Cancer Lunation  ·  Second Quarter

by Silvianne K. Delmars | July 12, 2024 |

This week’s astro update begins on Saturday, July 13, with the 2nd Quarter Moon in relational Libra, and ends on Sunday, July 21, with a Full Moon in an intense last degree of Capricorn. Here are the highlights (all times in PDT).

Saturday, July 13

The second quarter Moon is exact this afternoon at 3:49 pm PST at 22 Libra 01 squaring the Sun in Cancer. We have reached the first decision point in this Cancer lunation, as the energies shift and we are asked to commit ourselves more firmly towards the goals we set during the nurturing New Moon last week.

This quarter Moon will be found near bright Spica, the prominent star in the constellation of the Virgin Priestess, ancient representation of the Great Mother, holding her sheaf of life-giving grain. As we water and weed the projects and ideas seeded then, are we continuing to ‘feed’ ourselves with vital nourishment in all ways – physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual?

An important part of this inner nourishment is co-creating with other like-minded souls, so be sure to look for the opportunities that may present themselves, during this week and beyond, to create and foster reciprocal exchanges with those who share your most heartfelt values.

As mentioned in last week’s update, there will be an occultation of Spica by the Moon tonight, visible from some parts of North and Central America and the Caribbean islands. The Moon will be high in the sky after sunset, setting around midnight, looking to the southwest. For some good information on viewing times from various cities in North America see this link.

Monday, July 15

Mars in pleasure-loving Taurus will meet change agent Uranus this morning, with the beautiful Pleiades star cluster nearby. Although not normally visible to the naked eye, this is theoretically a rare chance to view Uranus unaided, with Mars as a marker to help you find it in the sky, and freed from the light of the quarter Moon, which will not rise above the horizon until noon. You will, of course, need very sharp eyesight and ideal sky conditions in the darkness preceding dawn.

Visible or not, this is a powerful timing to tune in to radically evolutionary, unexpected new forms to experience the sensuous, artistic side of the Sacred Masculine.

Jupiter is with the reddish star Aldebaran, the eye of the Bull constellation, also lighting up the early morning sky, just below Mars and Uranus along the ecliptic.

May these pointers spark your own imagination and inspire you to commune with the living night sky in the pregnant stillness before dawn to receive your own future-oriented messages!

Wednesday, July 17

The Moon goes out of bounds in its south declination today, where it will stay until next Monday. We are in the intensity of the once every 18 to 19 year cycle of the Sun-Moon relationship where, on certain days each month, the Moon will rise and set on the horizon either farther south or farther north than the Sun. This powerful cycle, which continues well into 2025, fosters a whole new way of being, no longer sourced in old versions of what is possible. Think wild, think crazy, think outside the mind cage of consensus reality—the Moon wants it that way! You’ll be glad you did.

This evening, looking south, the growing Moon will hang very close to bright red Antares, the royal star that marks the heart of the Scorpion constellation. Currently at 10 Sagittarius 05, Antares lies almost exactly opposite to Aldebaran (mentioned above as it hangs with Jupiter in the morning sky).

This is a magical opportunity to tune in, morning and evening, to the resonant polarity of these two stars that have figured so prominently in mythological stories through time and across cultures. With Aldebaran near the part of the sky that includes galactic edge, the gateway for souls entering into incarnation, and Antares in the vicinity of galactic center, where our souls go to be recycled after our sojourn here, we might feel the pull to tune in for messages regarding our soul trajectory, both personally and collectively, as one small but essential component of planetary Being Gaia.

Friday, July 19

The Moon is at its extreme south out of bounds position today, and Mars enters the zodiac sign of Gemini in the afternoon. The Sacred Masculine, in his 26-month Gemini overstory synodic cycle, now begins Phase Five, Gemini Maturity and Elder Knowledge, as he re-enters the sign where the journey began back in December of 2022. Time to distill all the lessons he has learned from his initiatory trek around the zodiac wheel, as he focuses on deeply integrating his new wisdom. In what ways might the archetype of the wise fool be calling to each of us, longing for a deeper implementation, in our personal lives as well as the shared collective vision?

Saturday, July 20 – Sunday, July 21

The transformative Capricorn Full Moon, exact on Sunday at 3:17 am at 29 Capricorn 09, will have its fullest observational rise on Saturday evening. Following last month’s Solstice Full Moon at the very beginning degrees of Capricorn, there is a deep evocation (one of many at this current time) of endings and beginnings. During its 3-day ceremonial Full Moon window, exact in the very last degree of Capricorn, the bright Moon hangs about 30 degrees further along the ecliptic from the stars of the Archer constellation, drawing our attention towards Galactic Center, at the heart of our Milky Way Galaxy.

These energies enabling deep change are ramped up with an intense activation from Pluto, as the Moon moves into Aquarius and meets up with Pluto there just a few hours later. As we surrender to the break-up of old structures that no longer serve us, we are asked to remain uncompromisingly clear-sighted about the possible pitfalls of group mind, as we take the beginning steps towards a genuinely more collaborative co-existence into the future.

I’ll leave you with the inspiring vision of Ellias Lonsdale as he begins to tease out the inherent meanings in the degree frequency for this Full Moon inhabiting Capricorn 30.

“Blue morning glories growing up a tall trellis.”

“If you shoot high, if you aim for the stars, and if you never let them out of your sight, you will attain to mighty vistas of seeing and knowing and being above all ordinary conscious awareness. You will live a higher-frequency existence, independent of your outer life, in which you are tapped for greater purposes as a matter of course…. Everything about it is a tall order. We are asking ourselves a lot. We are demanding that we obey the law of destiny all the way through.”

Following the call of our soul’s destiny is indeed what we all came here for at the Turning of The Ages. Remember to draw on the myriads of supportive energies available to each one of us, on a daily basis, most especially including the magical activations encoded in our relationship with the Night Sky. And never doubt that you are up to the task.

Each one of us was forged from stardust, all those eons ago, for just this one timeless moment of unprecedented rebirth. Time to show up fully for the cosmic party, with open hearts and a sense of adventure!
