Sagittarius Lunation · Second Quarter

by Silvianne K. Delmars | Dec 7, 2024 |

This week’s astro update begins with a second quarter Pisces Moon on Sunday morning and ends with an out-of-bounds Gemini Full Moon the following Sunday. Here are the highlights (all times in PST).

Sunday, December 8

The Second Quarter Moon at 17 Pisces 02 squares the Sun in Sagittarius, exact at 7:27 this morning. The Moon also makes its monthly conjunction with Saturn today. Look for them together in the evening sky, towards the south, setting around midnight. Royal Star Fomalhaut, bright star of the Fish constellation, will be shining nearby.

This is the first turning point in this month’s Sagittarius lunation, prompting decisive action as we begin to bring last week’s New Moon intentions into manifestation.

Monday, December 9

The waxing gibbous Moon is conjunct invisible Neptune in the evening sky, an opportunity to sit in contemplation and listen with the inner ear for otherworldly inspiration. The theme for their meet-up degree of Pisces 28 is, “The need to give voice to one’s deepest feelings in a manner which transcends the coercion of worldly experience.” (from The Circular Temple by John Sandbach).

Leo overstory Venus lends her support in this endeavor, as she traverses the fifth gate of communication this month, activating the throat chakra, in her evening star ascent journey. Look for her, shining brightly high in the west after sunset.

Tuesday, December 10

The Sun in adventurous Sagittarius is trining teacher Chiron in mission-driven Aries this morning, followed by a Moon/Chiron rendezvous a few hours later. We are invited to use our innate, fiery, direct knowing that functions outside of linear perception to plumb the depths of our own inner landscape. Who knows what hidden, healing treasures we may uncover in the process.

Wednesday, December 11

Leo overstory retrograde Mercury, still reeling from its interior conjunction with the Sun last week, completed its 10-day quick-change, metamorphic phase yesterday, reaching 10 degrees separation from the Sun. What messages might it have for us as it synthesizes its archetypal exploration of sovereign, uber-creative Leo and prepares for an all-new synodic cycle to start later this week?

Thursday, December 12

Venus in Aquarius is opposite to Mars in Leo, exact today just a few hours after midnight. As the planets of the Sacred Feminine and Sacred Masculine near the end of their respective synodic cycle journeys, they are reflecting to each other the brilliance of this independent, freedom-loving resonant polarity.

We can directly access any wisdom they might offer for our own sacred marriage, both individually and collectively, as we contemplate Venus in the western sky just after sunset, and then stay tuned for Mars to appear later in the evening in the east.

The waxing gibbous Moon can be found approaching the Pleiades this evening, with fiery Aldebaran and bright Jupiter below along the ecliptic. Although not visible, Uranus is also with the Moon tonight, bringing its unpredictable, eccentric, I-just-gotta-be-me vibe. A good time to throw caution to the wind and revel in your own unique, wacky expression. If you don’t, who will?

Friday, December 13

The Leo overstory Mercury synthesis phase ends, as this Quixotic planet reaches 15 degrees from the Sun, and the Moon goes out-of-bounds until December 18. Yet another invitation to tune into and follow the inner currents as we set aside “business as usual”.

The Geminid meteor shower peaks tonight, rising in mid-evening, with possible viewing all night, although there will definitely be competition from the bright Moon.

Saturday, December 14

The waxing, almost-Full Moon can be seen with Jupiter (both last night and tonight). Currently in the zodiac sign of Gemini, Jupiter is now shining brightly in the horns of the Bull constellation with royal star Aldebaran, its fiery eye, nearby. Don’t miss this inspiring show, as they travel across the night sky, visible from shortly after sunset until dawn.

Sunday, December 15

The Moon at 23 Gemini 53 stands opposite the Sun in Sagittarius, exact at 1:02 am. We have arrived at the timeless moment of fullest expression in this month’s vision-questing lunation. How have our New Moon intentions come to fruition? Take a moment to pause and celebrate all that has unfolded over the last couple of weeks, both gifts and challenges. What insights have we gained to inform our upcoming journey through the waning moon phases?

Mercury stations direct around midday today at 06 Sagittarius 23, marking the beginning of new 112-day Sagittarius Overstory synodic cycle. With the Moon reaching its maximum out-of-bounds for this cycle on the same day, we are being prompted to surrender to the fullest potential of this fiery, inspirational sign as we courageously push the boundaries of our own comfort zone in this time of unprecedented transformation on planet Earth.

“Fortune favors the bold” – especially as we act from our own deepest essence, faithfully following our unique inner voice as we navigate the roaring winds of change. May they cleanse our souls and carry us to new, more fruitful territory.
