This week’s astro update began with an out-of-bounds Gemini Full Moon on Sunday, December 15, and ends with a Last Quarter Moon in Libra the day after the December Solstice. Here are the highlights (all times in PST).
Sunday, December 15
The wildly out-of-bounds Full Moon at 23 Gemini 53 was exact at 1:02 am, marking the culmination point of this bold and daring Sagittarius lunation. Adding to the emphasis on these potent vision-questing energies, messenger Mercury also stationed direct today, beginning a whole new 112-day synodic cycle with a Sagittarius overstory. Time to find the still place within and listen for potentially transformative messages of hope and inspiration as we journey through the powerful week to come.
Monday, December 16
The waning Moon, just past full, will be illuminating the stars Castor and Pollux, at the feet of The Twins constellation this evening. The Moon will rise an hour or so after sunset and they will travel together all night across the sky. This is a magical activation of this potent area of the night sky, out towards the Galactic Edge. A great timing for sitting in contemplation with what is possible. What new energies are longing to stream in now, through you, from this generative cosmic origin point?
Tuesday, December 17
Leo overstory Venus continues high and brightly visible in the western sky until well after sunset. Adding to the emphasis on communication seeded by Mercury’s new cycle that began on Sunday, Venus is at the midpoint of this month’s journey through the throat chakra portal in her evening star ascent. She is reveling in the visionary energies of Aquarius all month, as she journeys through this far-seeing sign, contacting her own deepest inner truth and transmitting its potentially evolutionary wisdom.
Tuesday-Wednesday, December 17-18
Starting late in the evening on Tuesday, Mars can be seen in the eastern sky, just below Castor and Pollux, in The Twins constellation, with the waning Moon hovering very close. The Moon will actually be seen to occult (pass in front of) Mars, visible from certain areas in the far north, including parts of Canada, Greenland, eastern Russia, and Alaska. This Mars Moon conjunction is exact at 1:13 am PST.
Another potent activation of this area of potentiality in the night sky, as actional Mars, currently retrograde in fiery Leo, is illuminated by the Moon’s light. Mars is in the final gestational period of his 26-month long sojourn through archetypal Gemini, now dreaming the dreams of the soon to emerge Mars in Cancer overstory.
What might a new version of the nurturing Cancer sacred masculine, sourced in Leo sovereign creativity, look like? We will all be living into the answers as we journey over the next couple of years towards a deeper archetypal integration of this authentic version of masculine expression, so distorted and maligned in historical times by the aberration of patriarchy.
Thursday, December 19
Today and tomorrow, the waning gibbous Moon will be visible a few hours before dawn activating the royal star Regulus, the beating heart of the Lion constellation. Regulus can be found just below the reverse question mark pattern of stars, the “Sickle”, that forms the head of the Lion, looking towards the south. Tune in for activations of your own deep sense of courage and sovereignty from this powerful star.
Saturday, December 21
The Sun enters the sign of Capricorn at 1:21 am, marking the December solstice point. At this powerful still-point, when the Sun appears to stand still on the horizon for three days, one of the four great turning points of the earthly year, we are invited to find our own still center. As we tune in for messages of faith and wisdom to nurture us through this incredibly volatile time of planetary transformation, we are also called to send out our own prayers of gratitude and renewal for sacred Earth and all her creatures, including ourselves.
John Sandbach’s title for this Capricorn 1 degree frequency is “The ability to stay connected to one’s uniquely personal and private vision”. The Pleiadian symbol is, “The king of an unknown land sends a letter to the known world.” The image speaks to “being radically different and attempting to make it known. Profound attempts to overcome isolation.” From The Circular Temple by John Sandbach.
As we prepare to enter into the fecund darkness of winter here in the northern hemisphere, our task is to stay connected to our most essential self, so that it may seed our dreams through this potent womb time, to emerge as a uniquely exquisite flower when the time is right, taking its essential place in the garden of the emerging New Earth reality.
Sunday, December 22
The Moon at 01 Libra 34 squares the Sun in Capricorn this afternoon. This is the last turning point of the Sagittarius New Moon lunation, when we once again decide what needs to be composted for the new cycle that will begin with next week’s Capricorn New Moon.
Although it can certainly be a challenge in the present out-of-control culture, with its frantic promotion of an artificial busyness at this sacred time of year, we are being called deep within, no matter where we live on the globe, to contemplate and honor the gifts of the past month, and the past year, allowing ourselves to feel and process whatever comes up – deep grief, certainly, at this time of massive loss, as well as deep gratitude for all the love we have experienced, in both large and small moments.
Let us remember to show up for ourselves and for each other in small, everyday acts of compassion and kindness. This is the essential work of the moment, for each of us individually, as we learn to fully embrace our unique, irreplaceable role in this unprecedented unfolding of a new collective reality.
