Virgo Lunation  ·  Last Quarter

This week’s astro update begins with an out-of-bounds Last Quarter Moon in Cancer today, September 24, and ends with the Libra New Moon Solar Eclipse on October 2. Here are the highlights (all times in PDT).

Tuesday, September 24

Our week begins with the Last Quarter Moon at 02 Cancer 12 squaring the Sun in Libra at 11:50 am PDT. The waning Moon is passing Jupiter, near royal star Aldebaran, the eye of the Bull constellation, with the Pleiades star cluster just above.

The Moon also reaches its extreme out of bounds north position today, encouraging us to try new approaches, especially in the realm of relationship. This is the final week of the lunation that started with the Virgo New Moon at the beginning of September.

Time to assess our experiences over the last few weeks, assimilating all that has been experienced, as we consciously let go of what no longer serves, making room for the new cycle beginning next week. With Mercury in Virgo (now only 5 degrees away from the Sun) reaching an exact flowing Earth trine with change instigator Uranus in Taurus earlier this morning, we are supported in tuning in to our body rhythms, inviting kinesthetic rather than purely rational or intellectual modes of internal integration, as well as in our communication with others.

Wednesday, September 25

Today and tomorrow, the waning crescent Moon will be near Mars, making an exact conjunction this morning at 5:40 am at 11 Cancer 55. They will be passing near the stars Castor and Pollux, at the feet of the Twins constellation, with bright start Procyon in Canis Minor nearby, rising around midnight and visible all morning through sunrise.

This is an easily visible timing that invites us to commune with Mars as he traverses this potent region of the night sky at the Galactic Edge. Now in the last stage of his journey of archetypal integration in Gemini, the sacred masculine is testing the waters in Cancer, incubating a whole new synodic cycle journey that will begin next January in this nurturing sign. What new aspects of authentic masculine expression, sourced in a healthy desire to responsibly nurture and protect family and tribe, might be dreaming in the pregnant depths, waiting to be birthed into form over the coming months?

Thursday, September 26

Mercury, invisible to us now as it travels around the other side of the Sun, has its second sign change since beginning the current Leo overstory synodic cycle on August 28, having passed through Virgo and now entering Libra very early this morning. What might sparky, direct-intuitive-perception Leo Mercury have to learn from airy, process-oriented Libra?

Friday, September 27

Leo synodic overstory Venus continues her ascent journey, now traversing the reproductive, second chakra portal, visible in the western evening sky. What messages might she have for you, as you seek to enhance your capacity for embodied creativity on all levels?

The waning crescent Moon returns back in bounds today.

Sunday, September 29

The thin sliver of the waning crescent Moon meets with royal star Regulus this morning, low on the eastern horizon just an hour or so before dawn. In this time of deep change on planet Earth, Regulus, the glowing heart of the Lion constellation, can be found in the very first degree of the zodiac sign of Virgo, an archetype that embodies the wisdom and magic of the sacred work.

This is a potent opportunity to tune in with an open heart, seeking illumination around this magical alchemy, as the Lion constellation, long associated with sovereign, creative power, transmits its wisdom through the seasonal sign of earthy Virgo, dedicated to selfless service and attunement to Earth and her rhythms.

Meanwhile, Mars in nurturing Cancer is making an exact trine to structure-loving Saturn in Pisces this morning. This is another alchemical combination, encouraging us to channel our compassion into positive, action-oriented steps as we allow ourselves to access our deepest feelings.

Monday, September 30

Mercury reaches exact exterior conjunction with the Sun this afternoon at 08 Libra 11. Leo overstory Mercury is at the center point of its psychopomp phase, invisible to us as it traverses the far side of the Sun. Although not visible, we can still tune in for the wisdom offered by this potent timing, as the messenger planet, along with the Sun, traverses the Virgin Priestess constellation.

Wednesday, October 2

A new lunation month begins today, with a Libra New Moon Annular Solar Eclipse at 10 Libra 14. The New Moon will then be conjunct Mercury a few hours later. This eclipse will be visible in the lower part of South America.

This is a south node eclipse, meaning the Sun and Moon are aligned with the south node in Libra, standing opposite to the north node in Aries. Although the entire axis is always activated together, there is an emphasis on clearing past energies when the south node is on the front lines. Relationship is highlighted in the balance-seeking, air sign of Libra. What old, outworn patterns of co-dependency might need to be cleared for you to move forward with a renewed sense of Aries self-motivated mission and pioneering spirit?

This eclipse is in the same degree of longitude as the stars Vindemiatrix and Porrima in the constellation of the Maiden or Virgin Priestess. Porrima is seen as being at the left elbow of the figure, and Vindemiatrix at her right arm.

According to Starlight Elixirs and Cosmic Vibrational Healing by Smulkis and Rubenfeld, Vindemiatrix “can strengthen resolve and the ability to follow through where other individuals are involved. People who work together can gradually discover a common goal. You may find that there are resistances and struggles with accepting that goal as your own… By utilizing this star, you may discover the ideas that formed the initial inspiration. This can assist greatly in deeper modes of apprenticeship or learning between the individual and the group, particularly where what you are learning is not fully known at the outset. This star can be a beneficial influence for research groups involved in a cooperative creative process where the end result is unknown.”

As we come to the end of this two-week eclipse portal of transformation, we are asked to contemplate how our relationship with self and others has been changed. Beginning with the Lunar eclipse in Pisces invoking our deep soul longing to experience our ecstatic connection with Great Mystery, we have arrived at the Solar Eclipse activation of the self and other polarity of Aries/Libra.

As we learn to re-orient ourselves around our true center, sourced in our own truth and freed from unconscious compulsions to seek validation or approval from the outside, we develop a renewed ability to create and foster truly collaborative relationships. This capacity for collaboration by radically autonomous individuals, deeply in harmony with sacred Earth rhythms, will be the linchpin of New Earth unfolding.
