Virgo Lunation  ·  Second Quarter

by Silvianne K. Delmars | Sept 9, 2024 |

This week’s astro update begins with a restless Second Quarter Moon in Sagittarius on September 10 and ends with a Pisces Full Moon Lunar Eclipse on September 17. Here are the highlights (all times in PDT).

Tuesday, September 10

The waxing Moon in Sagittarius squares the Virgo Sun around 11:00 pm tonight, as we head towards next week’s Full Moon. Time to consciously employ Sagittarius’ focus and enthusiasm to anchor any intentions we set at the New Moon into everyday reality. The focus this month is on Virgo and its innate ability to perceive and foster Earth’s subtle interconnections. What simple, everyday ceremonial practices are calling to us as we foster our own unique inner Priest/ess expression?

The waxing Moon will hang near bright red Antares this evening, at the heart of the Scorpion constellation, visible until about 10:00 pm. Look to the southwest, along the ecliptic.

Wednesday, September 11

The Moon will be traversing the stars of the Archer constellation tonight and tomorrow, visible until around midnight in the southern sky. This is a generous invitation to tune into messages beaming to us from the heart of the Milky Way, the center of our galaxy.

Thursday, September 12

Mercury is visible all week, low on the eastern horizon in the early morning twilight. Today it comes to within 15 degrees of the Sun in its Leo overstory synodic cycle journey, marking its arrival at the underworld threshold, and its archetypal role as Guardian of the Gate for souls preparing to embark on the journey to the depths.

Mars and Jupiter, both in the sign of Gemini, continue to be visible in the predawn hours in the eastern sky, separated now by more than 15 degrees, with Jupiter reaching its 90 degree “square” angle to the Sun, exact today. Mars continues to highlight the area of the Sacred Hoop at the Galactic Edge, calling our attention to this potent region of the cosmos, seen by many cultures as a place of beginnings (and endings), where souls come into incarnation.

Friday, September 13

Today is Friday the 13th, the first of two this year (with the second occurring in December). A day to celebrate the Sacred Feminine, as Friday was named after the Norse goddess Freya (or after Venus in many Latin-based languages). The number 13 and its correlation to the 13-based yearly moon/month calendars also had deep associations with the archetypal Feminine (applicable to both men and women).

What better time, under the light of an iconoclastic out of bounds Moon (which reached its maximum southern declination again yesterday), to consciously take back the deliberate distortions and judgments of the dominator culture as we feel into our deepest knowing, stored within our DNA, creating new, never-before-imagined ceremonies inspired by intimations of our hidden, ancient heritage.

The following quote speaks to this past into future aspect of our vital mission as Seed People at a Great Turning of the Ages, as we work towards a renewed future, sourced in the powerful wisdom of an all-but-forgotten past:

“There was a time when you were not a slave, remember that. You walked alone, full of laughter, you bathed bare-bellied. You say you have lost all recollection of it, remember. You say there are no words to describe this time, you say it does not exist. But remember. Make an effort to remember. Or, failing that, invent.”

– Monique Wittig, Les Guerilleres

Saturday, September 14

The waxing Moon, back in bounds later today, has its monthly meet-up with Pluto in the wee hours, as it hangs out in retrograde motion in the very last degree of Capricorn, before entering fully into the sign of Aquarius in November.

Although not visible, this Moon activation of Pluto is an opportunity to tune in for powerful messages. What still needs to be composted in our own individual psyches, as we bear witness to the collapse of the old paradigm happening all around us? What wisdom might the planet of deep, inexorable change have to offer as we sit in communion with the night sky.

Sunday, September 15

Wisdom-keeper Saturn is also available to us as we seek council with the heavens this week, highlighted by the waxing gibbous Moon tonight and tomorrow night. An occultation of Saturn by the Moon will be visible from the western United States, Australia, western Canada and north-western Mexico,  from about 4:00 to 5:00 am on the morning of September 17.

Whether or not you are in an area where the occultation is visible, be sure to tune in with Saturn this week as it continues to travel slowly through the “watery” area of the sky, found among the stars of the Fish and Water Bearer constellations. It will be visible most of the night, having reached its opposition with the Sun last Sunday.

Monday, September 16

Leo overstory synodic cycle Venus, in the relational sign of Libra, continues to navigate the second chakra portal of essential creativity, entered last week in her conjunction with the crescent Moon in the early evening sky. She will be exactly opposite to Chiron in Aries this afternoon. This timing highlights the ongoing emphasis on recognizing and repairing the deep distortions of the sacred warrior archetype (with potent connections to the US natal chart), so powerfully activated during last April’s solar eclipse.

What new insights might be gained by the sovereign Sacred Feminine, as she surrenders to the realities of conscious relationship with others? And how can we best hold the balance between an uncompromising allegiance to our deepest personal vision, and deep engagement in collaborative relationships that serve the greater whole?

Tuesday, September 17

Our week ends with a Pisces Full Moon, also a partial Lunar Eclipse, at 25 Pisces 41 opposite to the Sun in Virgo, exact at 7:34 pm PDT. This a deep feeling, super-watery Full Moon, with resonant planet Neptune very near to the Moon. And, there is also a strong emphasis on earthing this dreamy energy, as the Sun in spiritually-grounded Virgo is aided and abetted by an Earth sign trine, with the presence of Saturn also lending ballast.

Full Moons always invite us to consider the entire resonant polarity being activated (not just the sign the Moon is in). And the eclipse energy adds emphasis as well, asking us to consider the shadow side of both signs, as we seek to embody their highest expression.

Pisces and Virgo are both all about the sacred, from their respective Yin elements of Water and Earth. Pisces urges us to tune in to the incredible waves of cosmic heart energy now showering our planet, as this Great Turning. Meanwhile, Virgo insists that we bring that energy down to Earth in practical ways.

With Saturn, the planet of limits and boundaries, only about 10 degrees away from this Full Moon, we are being asked to somehow bring the gritty realities of our daily interactions into resonance with our emerging numinous, heart-centered revelations. All the remaining blocks and stubborn allegiances to old stuck patterns will inevitably surface to be acknowledges and released. In the midst of its 2½-year journey through Pisces, Saturn is demanding that we envision and create new structures to support the changing frequencies of an expanded consciousness, as it continues to inexorably unfold all around us.

This Full Moon window offers assistance in this challenging endeavor, with a potent earth element trine of deep-change-agent Pluto in practical Capricorn, electrical Uranus in sensual Taurus, and the Sun in reverent Virgo. With both Pluto and Uranus in retrograde motion, this is definitely a time that supports going deep, allowing ourselves to be radically nourished by the often scary, but ultimately life-giving, currents of change that are upon us. There is no way out but through. Time to embrace the transformation, stepping into our power as co-creators of a New Earth reality.
